O CENTRO E AS MARGENS: A CONSTRUÇÃO DA PROTAGONISTA EM LUCÍOLA

Resumo

A partir da obra Lucíola (1862), de José de Alencar, este artigo apresenta uma análise sobre a construção da personagem protagonista, representada por seu duplo Maria da Glória versus Lúcia. Essa dupla personagem pontua as representações femininas da sociedade patriarcal na Corte do Segundo Reinado brasileiro, contrapondo o que se esperava dos papéis da mulher da boa sociedade e das marginalizadas cortesãs. Assim, ambas representam, respectivamente, o que denominou-se nesse estudo de personagens de centro e personagens às margens. Essa construção perpassou por abordagens conceituais da personagem de ficção, amparada pelas Teorias Miméticas da Literatura, em que a concepção de mimese e verossimilhança, proposta por Aristóteles, em Poética (1973), norteia as análises apresentadas. Ainda foram fundamentais para esta pesquisa, dentre muitos autores, as pontuações de Luís Filipe Ribeiro, em Mulheres de papel (1996); e Antonio Candido, em Literatura e sociedade (2008), defendendo a importância do contexto de produção da obra de arte para a construção das personagens. Ao final, foi possível vislumbrar como esse pensamento corrobora profundamente para o desfecho do romance, narrando a trajetória da protagonista Maria da Glória/Lúcia.

ABSTRACT

Considering the novel Lucíola (1862) by José de Alencar, this study presents an analysis of the construction of the main character, represented by the double Maria da Glória versus Lúcia. That doubled character highlights the female representations of patriarchal society in the court of the Brazilian Second Reign, opposing to what was expected of the woman roles of good society and of the marginalized courtesans. Thus both of them represent respectively what was called in this study of centre characters and margin characters. That construction went through conceptual approaches of fictional character, supported by literary theories of mimesis where the definition of mimesis and verisimilitude, as proposed by Aristotle in Poetics (1973), paves the way the analyses are presented. Among many critics, the discussions of Luís Filipe Ribeiro in his book Paper women (1996) and Antonio Candido in Literature and society (2008) were fundamental for this research as they defend the importance of the context of work of art production for the construction of the characters. Finally it was possible to see how that thought deeply corroborates to the end  of the novel by narrating the story of the main character Maria da Glória/Lúcia.
