NOSTALGIA E INTERMIDIALIDADE NAS ILUSTRAÇÕES DE BUTCHER BILLY

Resumo

Butcher Billy é um designer gráfico de Curitiba que recentemente alcançou notoriedade pela criação de ilustrações que se relacionam com a cultura pop em geral, especialmente com quadrinhos, música, jogos, séries de TV e cinema, mas também com política, religião e com as artes em geral. Dentre as ilustrações de seu portfólio, destacam-se as séries “Stephen King’s Stranger Love Songs”, “Dark Tales from the Black Mirror” e “Stranger Tales”. A primeira, por exemplo, é uma série de ilustrações que reproduzem a estética das capas dos livros de Stephen King produzidos nas décadas de 1970 e 1980. Do ponto de vista da Intermidialidade, alguns aspectos a serem investigados dizem respeito à aproximação entre as ilustrações de Butcher Billy e os textos que as inspiram, os processos que transpõem as fronteiras entre diversas mídias e as novas referências midiáticas criadas a partir das ilustrações. Outro aspecto a ser discutido refere-se aos motivos e impactos da recente onda nostálgica em produções culturais contemporâneas, especialmente em séries de televisão, cinema e literatura, movimento que também alcança as obras do artista. Mais do que uma alusão ou um remake de obras do passado, as ilustrações visam resgatar a essência de uma época por meio da recriação de uma estética específica.

ABSTRACT

Butcher Billy is a graphic designer from Curitiba, Brazil, who recently became well-known for creating illustrations that relate to pop culture in general, especially to comics, music, games, TV series and cinema, but also to politics, religion and arts in general. Among the illustrations in his portfolio are the series “Stephen King’s Stranger Love Songs”, “Dark Tales from the Black Mirror” and “Stranger Tales”. The first one, for instance, is a series of illustrations that reproduce the aesthetics of Stephen King’s book covers produced in the 1970s and 1980s. From the perspective of intermediality, some aspects that can be investigated are the approximation between Butcher Billy’s illustrations and the texts that have inspired them, the processes that involve the crossing of borders between several media, and the medial references created in the illustrations. Another aspect to be discussed relates to the reasons and impacts of the recent nostalgic wave in contemporary cultural products, especially in TV series, cinema and literature, a movement that also reaches Butcher Billy’s productions. More than an allusion to or a revival of works of the past, the illustrations aim to preserve an essence of a time by means of the recreation of a specific aesthetics.
